Man Gets 12 Years Over Drugs, South Texas Chase

McALLEN, Texas (AP) - A driver convicted of drug trafficking and assault after ramming a Border Patrol vehicle in South Texas has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

A federal judge in McAllen sentenced 40-year-old Martin Gonzalez-Ramirez, who's been in custody since the May incident.

Investigators say Gonzalez-Ramirez was driving a truck, at a high rate of speed, near Rio Grande City when officers began chasing the vehicle. Gonzalez-Ramirez cut through a parking lot and hit a law enforcement vehicle. An agent in the vehicle escaped serious injury.

Gonzalez-Ramirez was captured after a foot chase. Agents recovered more than 300 pounds of marijuana hidden in the truck.

Gonzalez-Ramirez pleaded guilty in July and was sentenced Monday.
