Mom Hospitalized After Husband Shoots Her, 4 Kids

BAY CITY, Texas (AP) - Authorities say a woman whose husband shot her three times before fatally shooting their four children is in critical condition at a Houston hospital.

Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center released the condition Thursday night of Laura Gonzalez.

Police say her husband, 24-year-old Jose Avila, shot his wife and their children before turning the gun on himself Wednesday near their home in Bay City, a town about 65 miles southwest of Houston.

Two of their young children died that day. The other two passed away Thursday at a hospital.

Authorities and friends say the family had a history of violence, including an assault Gonzalez reported just before Thanksgiving. She'd gone to a battered women's shelter.

She didn't press charges, but co-workers said she'd decided not to go back to her husband.
