Texas Town Holds Candlelight Vigil For Slain Kids

BAY CITY, Texas (AP) - Residents of a Southeast Texas town have gathered for a candlelight vigil in memory of four children shot and killed by their father at their home last week.

An estimated 200 people gathered outside of the Matagorda County Courthouse in Bay City to pray for Miguel, Daniel, Shaun and Cecilia Gonzalez, aged 5, 3 and 4 years and 18 months respectively.

More than 600 candles were lighted and placed on the courthouse steps in their memory.

The children's father, Jose Avila-Alva, killed himself after shooting the children and his estranged wife, Laura Gonzalez. The mother remains hospitalized in Houston in serious condition.

Bay City is a town of about 18,000 residents 65 miles southwest of Houston.
