House GOP To Reject Stopgap Payroll Tax Cut

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans and Democrats insist they want to extend the payroll tax cut before next week's deadline, but that task is looking more difficult.

The Senate is adjourned for the holidays, and House Republicans are ready to put aside a two-month extension of the tax cut and a package of jobless benefits. They're demanding that senators return to the Capitol for negotiations.

House GOP leaders want a one-year extension.

The Senate's top Democrat said he would refuse to negotiate until the House passes the short-term version.
