Rider Rallies Past Lady Coyotes in Tourney Opener

The Rider Lady Raiders controlled much of the first half of Thursday's meeting with rival Wichita Falls High School, but trailed 1-0 going into intermission.

But a goal by Paige Nobles helped turn things around in the second half, and Rider pulled out a 3-1 win in the opener of the United Regional Invitational at Memorial Stadium.

Nobles drew Rider even on a penalty kick goal, then Emily Croston put the Lady Raiders on top with a goal off of a corner-kick.

Brianna Watkins, fresh off a two-goal performance Tuesday against Abilene Wylie, added another goal in the last minute for the final result.

Most of the first half was played in Old High's defensive zone, but goalkeeper Kaegen Dunn and a solid defense kept Rider at bay.

Sierra Anderson scored on a quick counter-attack, fighting off a Rider defender to beat goalkeeper Sarah Haley and give the Lady Coyotes a 1-0 lead.

Old High falls to 1-4 on the season, while Rider improves to 4-2.

Both teams will play twice on Friday. Rider faces Kennedale at 9:00 a.m. at Memorial Stadium, then takes on Hirschi at noon at GWFSA Field E.

Wichita Falls HS plays Borger at 9:00 a.m. at Ervin Garnett Stadium (McNiel Jr High), then takes on the Lady Huskies at 4:00 p.m. at the Stadium.
