Lawmakers Hold Hearing On New Standardized Test

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas lawmakers are checking on the implementation of the new STAAR standardized test for public school children.

The Public Education Committee will hear testimony Monday from school officials and teachers about how the new test is being implemented and its impact on schools. STAAR stands for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness.

The STAAR test for students replaced the TAKS test starting this year. In addition to tracking student performance in English, math, science for students the 3rd through 8th grades, the tests will serve as end of semester exams for high school students. The test will represent 15 percent of their grade for those courses.

Lawmakers also want to hear about any recommended changes and make sure schools do not overly rely on the test.
