Texas Redistricting Closing Arguments Moved Up

A three judge panel moved up closing arguments on the Texas redistricting maps. The panel heard testimony Monday and Tuesday on wether the Texas Legislature violated the federal Voting Rights Act when it redrew the maps.

Minority groups said they want more time to present evidence on how they think the maps should look. Attorney General Greg Abbott asked the court to move quickly.

On Monday, political redistricting expert Theodore Arrington testified on behalf of the Justice Department. He said that because there are so few Democrats in the Texas Legislature who aren't minorities, working against them could constitute a violating of the Voting Rights Act.

Closing arguments will now be held on January 31st. Testimony will continue tomorrow with more expert witnesses.
