New information on the officer involved shooting in Wichita Falls.
Police say the officer who shot and killed Edward Washington III is out on administrative leave. That is standard with this type of incident.
We're also learning more about the 48 year old who was killed. Newschannel 6 obtained Washington's record and it shows he was convicted in 1988 for a charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer.
He was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He also served time for various other offenses, including evading arrest.
According to a news release, Police tried to pull over a car being driven by Washington. The release stated an officer saw Washington make a turn without signaling, but Washington tried to get away from the officer when the officer began the traffic stop.
A short chase ensued. Police said Washington turned east onto Harding, but then lost control of the car when he tried to make a right turn onto Otis Polk Drive.
The release said the officer got out of his car and Washington did the same. Police said Washington confronted the officer who fired his handgun, hitting Washington in the chest.
Rescue crews rushed him to United Regional Hospital, where he died. The officer was not hurt.
In a e-mail from WFPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Joe Snyder, Newschannel 6 has learned the incident started at 11:16 p.m. Friday night. Snyder said there are two different investigations ongoing."The Criminal Investigation Section, the Office of Professional Conduct and Crime Scene Technicians have responded to the scene," he wrote. Snyder said that is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.
Newschannel 6 will continue to follow this investigation.
