February 11 is National 2-1-1 Day

Wichita Falls, TX (February 2, 2012) - Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the North Texas Area United Way 2-1-1 call center is staffed by specialists to assist you with finding the information and help you need when you don't know who to call.

"February 11 is National 2-1-1 Day," says Matt Yell, director of the 2-1-1 call center in Wichita Falls. "The significance of designating February 11 as "our day" goes a long way in helping the public remember who to call when they don't know where to turn for help."

2-1-1 Day will be celebrated Saturday, February 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the volunteer income tax preparation site in the old Jerry's Scoreboard location on East Elliott behind Sikes Senter Mall. Staff members will be on hand with refreshments, giveaways, and a drawing to win a $211 Walmart gift card.

2-1-1- call specialists handled 24,289 calls from North Texans in need of assistance in 2011. Specialists help find health and human services assistance on everything from food and utilities to childcare, free tax filing assistance, job counseling services, mortgage assistance, health resources and more. 2-1-1 is the easiest way to access community-based organizations and government agencies that provide non-emergency services. In emergency situations, people should still call 9-1-1.

The North Texas 2-1-1 call center operates under national standards and is  staffed by certified bi-lingual specialists who quickly assess the callers' needs and refer them to the programs and services they need. 2-1-1 is offered throughout North Texas through a collaboration of the North Texas Area United Way and the Texas Health & Human Services Commission.
