A judge sentenced a Wichita County daycare owner to serve six months in prison and pay $239,300 in restitution.
Tonia Denise Chapa pleaded guilty in October 2011 on two counts of tax evasion. She admitted that she intentionally failed to file the required tax returns to avoid paying taxes.
Chapa owned and operated Kids Mega Center in Wichita Falls. The plea papers state that Kids Mega Center received payments from two U.S. government-funded programs:
-One program subsidized child care for low-income clients.
-The other program subsidized meals for the children.
Officials said the income Chapa earned from Kids Mega Center was spent on personal items. The case was investigated by Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation.
Chapa owned other daycare centers in Texoma and had several violations at the centers. An 8 month old suffered second degree burns at the Elite Childcare Day School. Click here to read more about the baby burned investigation.
