VA Finds More Misplaced Or Missing Grave Markers

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Veterans Affairs Department said it discovered 102 more headstones or markers on the wrong graves and 21 graves in need of markers in the cemeteries under its management.

The VA's update raises the total number of problems found to 249. The VA so far has audited nearly 1.5 million graves, or about half of the graves under its management.

VA officials said the number of discrepancies was small but unacceptable and they will try to notify family members.

In late January, VA officials told Congress it had discovered problems with some gravesites where contractors had undertaken renovations and had shifted the markers one grave space away from the correct site. This time, the majority of errors occurred when headstones were removed during second interments.

    A second attack near Barcelona has been foiled, police said early Friday morning.  A terrorist attack in Barcelona on Thursday took the lives of at least 13 and left 100 injured.
