Wichita County Added to FEMA List

AUSTIN, Texas - Disaster recovery aid in the form of Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements has been approved for three additional Texas counties affected by wildfires in 2011, the Texas Division of Emergency Management and FEMA have announced.

Under the latest amendment to the July 1, 2011, major disaster declaration for wildfires that occurred April 6 to Aug. 29, 2011, eligible applicants in Erath, Midland and Wichita counties may apply for Public Assistance (PA) reimbursements for all categories of work.

This program helps applicants recover costs incurred in removing disaster-related debris from public rights of way, and for measures taken by state and local emergency responders to protect lives and property before, during and after the disaster. The program also helps defray the cost of repairing roads, public buildings, utilities and other public infrastructure damaged or destroyed as a result of the wildfires.

With the amendment, 122 Texas counties are designated for assistance under the disaster declaration. (Texas has a separate disaster declaration for counties affected by wildfires from Aug. 30 to Dec. 31, 2011).

Supplementary funding under the PA program goes to the state and its agencies, local governments and certain private nonprofit organization. Under the program, FEMA obligates funds to the state for 75 percent of eligible costs, while the applicant covers the remaining 25 percent. The state forwards the federal funds to the eligible local governments or organizations that incurred costs.

"Although Public Assistance grants go to government entities and nonprofits, their intent is to help entire communities recover from last year's devastating wildfires," said Federal Coordinating Officer Kevin L. Hannes of FEMA.

Previously designated for the PA program as a result of the April 6-Aug. 29, 2011, wildfires are the counties of Anderson, Andrews, Archer, Armstrong, Bailey, Baylor, Bastrop, Blanco, Brewster, Briscoe, Brooks, Brown, Burnett, Callahan, Carson, Cass, Castro, Childress, Clay, Cochran, Coke, Coleman, Concho, Coryell, Cottle, Crane, Crockett, Crosby, Culberson, Dawson, Deaf Smith, Dickens, Donley, Duval, Eastland, Fisher, Foard, Franklin, Frio, Garza, Glasscock, Gonzales, Hall, Hansford, Hardeman, Hardin, Harrison, Haskell, Hartley, Hemphill, Hockley, Houston, Howard, Hutchinson, Irion, Jack, Jasper, Jeff David, Jim Hogg,  Jones, Kent, King, Kimble, Knox, Lamar, Lamb, Lampasas, Lee, Leon, Live Oak, Lynn, Marion, Martin, Mason, Menard, Mills, Mitchell, Montague, Moore, Morris, Motley, Newton, Nolan, Ochiltree, Oldham, Palo Pinto, Panola, Pecos, Potter, Presidio, Randall, Reagan, Red River, Roberts, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Saba, Scurry, Shackelford, Somervell, Stephens, Sterling, Stonewall, Sutton, Swisher, Terrell, Terry, Throckmorton, Tom Green, Trinity, Tyler, Upton, Val Verde, Walker, Wheeler, Wilbarger and Winkler and Young.
