Posted: Updated:

The Better Business Bureau has received calls from consumers last week and Monday that have received a scam text message.  It refers people to a site where they can "claim a $1,000 Walmart Gift Card" once going to the bogus mobile site they are asked to provide certain private personal information.

· Several different sites have been mentioned that are not affiliated with Walmart. Walmart confirms this with the alert that is posted on their site.

· Consumers are often asked for private personal information including credit card numbers or social security numbers. Providing this type of information is very likely to lead to identity theft or credit card fraud.

· These attacks are taking place through SMS Text message to personal mobile phones.

· This type of scam has come to be known as "Smishing" because of the use of SMS text technology. Similar to the way scam web sites send "Phishing" emails.
