MSU Softball Falls at TWU

Texas Woman's Tiffany Weise drove in four runs to key a pair of three-run innings to lead the Pioneers to a 6-2 win over Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference play here Friday night.

The Pioneers claimed the opening game of the three-game set to improve to 28-8 on the season and to 10-2 in league play, while the Mustangs fell to 14-19 and 4-9.

The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pioneer Field.

MSU shortstop Kelley Schaefer paced the Mustangs by going 2-for-3 at the plate while providing the Mustangs with their lone offensive punch in the sixth inning.

The freshman from Waco laced an RBI double to left field to plate Courtney Bingham to break up TWU starter Larisa Garcia's shutout bid. Schaefer came around to score due to an errant throw on Nicki Duff's steal of second base later in the inning.

Garcia improved to 10-5 on the season allowing an earned run on four hits in the complete game victory, but received ample help from the TWU top of the order.

Sophomore Bailey Vrazel and senior Addison Staley joined Weise with two hits each to account for six of TWU's seven hits. Vrazel added three stolen bases while Staley swiped two to set up Weise with excellent RBI chances.

Weise put the Pioneers up 2-0 with a two-run single in the third then highlighted the three-run fifth with a two-round double to the left-field gap in the fifth.

Freshman Lindsi Glenn took the loss to fall to 12-10 on the season yielding six runs - all earned - on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout in six innings of work. Brenna Hennan came on to pitch a scoreless seventh.

Junior outfielder Courtney Bingham and senior third baseman Mallory Mooney also collected one hit each for the Mustangs.
