Newschannel 6 took a closer look at the top crash intersections in Wichita Falls. We went to the Wichita Falls Police Department for a list of hot spots.
What was surprising is some of the top wreck sites are Walmart parking lots.
The Walmart on Central Freeway is number one, with nine accidents. Next is the Sikes Senter Mall parking lot with six wrecks and the Walmart at Greenbriar is third with five accidents.
After that the list starts getting into actual intersections and roads. The top intersection with the most accidents so far this year is Kell and Kemp.
Police say the number one factor that leads to crashes is drivers just not paying attention.
Officer Jeff Hughes with the Wichita Falls PD said, "Anytime you get multiple things that a driver has to be attentive to sometimes they get focused on one thing. A lot of times people get in a hurry."
In high traffic areas like Callfield and Kemp, not taking your time can be dangerous.
Hughes said,"Its a lot better to be a minute or two behind than it is to run a red light and never get where you are going."
Besides being a safety hazard, the top crash sites also affect businesses in the area.
Ginger Turner works across the street from the mall, one of the top spots for wrecks.
"I've seen several and it takes them a couple hours to clean the mess up and haul the cars off," Turner said.
Just like Officer Hughes, she says the main cause is usually drivers in a hurry.
Turner said, "I think they get impatient, they get tired of waiting they make it a cut through and its really not a cut through."
With the high volume of accidents already this year, officials try to stay on top of the busiest intersections.
"These intersections are always being looked at," Hughes said. "Seeing if they can be improved and seeing if improvement needs to be there."
Here is a complete list of high collision intersections and non-intersections from January 1 to March 31, 2012.
