A Wichita Falls man is held on a million dollar bond for the death of a 4-month-old child.
Wichita Falls police arrested Brent Allen Benefield, 30, Tuesday night and booked him into the Wichita County Jail.
Police responded to a call at Benefield's home February 8 on the 4300 block of McNiel Avenue. According to the arrest affidavit, the call was for an unresponsive child. Benefield made the call.
In the affidavit, Benefield claimed the child went limp while he was changing its diaper. However, when questioned, Benefield was unable to explain what happened to the child.
The child was then flown to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, due to the severity of his injuries. He was evaluated and found to have numerous injuries to his body, including a brain injury. The injury was the result of a subdural hematoma inside his skull due to blunt force trauma. The child also had retinal hemorrhages in both eyes, along with swelling of the brain. The child was pronounced dead February 12.
An autopsy was performed the next day and the cause of death was determined to be close head injury due to blunt impact to the head and brain. The death was ruled a homicide.
Benefield told police he was the only person in contact with the child after the child's mother left the child earlier that morning. The mother said the child was fine when she left.
