WFISD Athletic Director Kenny Catney released the following statement to Newschannel 6:
"The Wichita Falls ISD will be recommending to the [Board] of Trustees Brandon Smith for employment as the Head Boys Basketball Coach for Wichita Falls High School. Coach Smith spent 2 years as a Varsity 1st assistant coach at Water Valley ISD. He then became a 1st Assistant coach at San Angelo Central High school from 2006 -2009. He served as Head Boys coach at Vernon High School from August 2009 to present. As a coach at Vernon he was awarded the Weldon Craig Sportsman of the Year. He has spent the past summers work with elite basketball camps at the University of Kansas, University of Texas and Texas A&M.
Coach Smith [will] bring a disciplined, team oriented, and fast paced style of basketball to Wichita Falls High School. He believes strong moral standards and a strong work ethic will be a few of the traits need to maintain success at Wichita Falls High School."
Smith's Lions started strong in 2011-12, going 14-7 in non-district, but struggled with a tough 6-3A schedule, finishing 2-8 in league play.
He replaces Carl Pennington, who was head coach of the Coyotes for the last seven seasons after serving seven more as an assistant at Old High.
