LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - A judge sentenced a former Fort Sill soldier to life in prison for the beating death of his 10-year-old stepson.
Comanche County District Judge Gerald Neuwirth followed the jury's recommendation when he handed down the sentence to Lancey Ray on Tuesday. A jury convicted Ray last month of first-degree murder in the December 2010 death of Malik Ray.
The 39-year-old must serve 85 percent of his service, or about 38 years, before he is eligible for parole.
According to reports, Ray's attorneys say they will appeal the jury's verdict.
Prosecutors accused Ray of beating the boy with a small wooden board and belt and forcing him to sit outside in freezing temperatures.
