A grass fire ignited just after 3 p.m. Thursday on Highway 79 and FM 1954 past Lakeside City.
Our Newschannel 6 crew said the highway was shut down around 3:30 because of blinding smoke billowing across the roadway. Lanes opened back up about an hour later.
At least five different departments worked to put out the fire. They included volunteer fire departments from Bowman, Holiday, Wichita falls, and Lakeside city. Archer County Sheriff's department was also there to help with traffic control.
The flames were put out by 5:30 p.m. 60 acres were scorched and but no structures were damaged. Archer County Sheriff's office suspects that a grass fire from the fireworks the night before re-kindled.
Newschannel 6 Jack Lamson was at the fire and spoke with one witness who sprung into action with other good samaritans to help a trapped donkey avoid the spreading flames. You can find that story here.
