Dozens Of Fires Break Out From Fireworks

Posted: Updated:

More than 25 grass fires broke out in about two hours early Thursday morning and they were mostly because of fireworks.

Assistant Fire Marshal James Gowan said about 26 grass fires were ignited Thursday from about 12:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Some of the fires included were Wiley Rd. and Bacon Switch Rd. In Wichita Falls and Schmoker Rd. in Burkburnett.

On top of that, there were about 60 calls overnight about fireworks.

One of the largest fires fought that night was on Riley Ranch Loop about two miles South of Schmoker Rd. It burned about 30 acres.

Burkburnett Fire Chief Rodney Ryalls said it was the busiest night of the year so far. He said this is not surprising because the 4th of July is usually busy.
