In 2011 the City View Mustangs had a deadly one-two punch that shared the same initials: D.J.
After rushing for over 1,600 yards and 24 touchdowns, D.J. Brown is graduated and up in Plainview getting ready to suit up for Wayland Baptist.
"D.J. Brown was a hard worker," says head coach Rudy Hawkins. "He kind of paved the way."
His namesake, D.J. Coursey, is back as a sophomore, counted on to be the main horse in the Mustangs' option offense.
"He's fast as all get-out," says one of his linemen, senior O'Shae Nolan. "He can make any guy miss. There's not a guy in this town that's gonna tackle him one-on-one."
Nolan's job is to make sure Coursey gets those one-on-one matchups.
He's one of two senior guards on the City View offensive line, along with Tri Hoang.
He likes knowing he just needs to give D.J. a head-start, and the younger player will take it the rest of the way.
"It gives you a lot of confidence if you know that if you get your block, they're going to do something big," Nolan said.
About once a game last season, that something big was six points for the Mustangs.
"D.J. had a really good freshman year," said Coach Hawkins. "We're expecting a lot of big things out of him. He's got great vision."
Coursey will have some help in the backfield, with fellow sophomores Ryan Karr at quarterback and Daulton Jackson as another running back.
Karr has been looked to as the future triggerman of the offense for a few years.
"Ever since he was in 8th grade we've been kind of looking forward to having Ryan come up," Coach Hawkins said. "He did a real good job on the J.V. last year."
It's a young core that could have the Mustangs competing for district titles, and more, in the next three years.
"He's got big shoes to fill," Hawkins admits. "But I believe D.J. Coursey can do it."
The Mustangs will open the season with four of their first five games on the road, starting August 31st at Olney.
