Evacuations in Electra

Posted: Updated:

Streets are blocked off in downtown Electra, and surrounding buildings have been evacuated because of a Hazmat situation.

Newschannel 6 is told 1/3 of the city's downtown area is at a standstill until further notice. A trash truck caught fire this morning in front of the State National Bank in Electra. State National Bank is located at the corner of North Main Street and East Cleveland Avenue. It also happens to be right between City Hall and the Electra Volunteer Fire Department.

A chemical in the trash reacted badly with the water being used to fight the fire, forcing emergency crews to evacuate nearby buildings and shut down roads. The Wichita Falls Hazmat crew went to Electra to help block the area.

Electra emergency crews called a Hazmat team from Ft. Worth to help clean the area. The evacuations and street closures will remain in place until the Ft. Worth crew arrives and takes care of the mess.

Newschannel 6 is told that no one in the area is in immediate danger because any gases that went in the air are dissipating in the wind.
