Children Found Safe After Being Swept Away in Drainage Ditch

Three children were swept away Saturday afternoon in a drainage ditch. It happened just after 12 p.m. with a search lasting 1.5 hours.

Officials tell us an off-duty firefighter spotted a 9-year-old boy off Speedway and Harrison. The boy told the firefighter him, his sister and a friend were playing in a drainage ditch when they were overcome by water. That ditch runs from Fillmore to Martin Plaza and it's underground. The firefighter and the boy pulled up to Martin Plaza and that's where they found the 12-year-old girl. She was able to pull herself out of the water but the 13-year-old was still missing.

The Public Works Department, The Wichita Falls Fire Department, Wichita County Sheriff's Office, Wichita Falls Police Department and a dive team were called to the location. They were beginning their water search for the 13-year-old boy but before that happened he was located by a police officer walking home in a state of shock. None of the children were injured.
