Romney Says "Hope Is Not A Strategy" For Dealing With The Middle East

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Mitt Romney will be borrowing President Barack Obama's "hope" slogan in a planned foreign policy address Monday.

In prepared remarks, Romney said "Hope is not a strategy" for dealing with the Middle East. He said the U.S. can't support its friends and defeat its enemies in the region when its words aren't backed up by deeds.

Romney is accusing Obama of being passive when it comes to global affairs.

The Republican presidential nominee plans to say the U.S. should use its influence "wisely, with solemnity and without false pride, but also firmly and actively."

An Obama campaign TV ad is calling Mitt Romney "reckless" and "amateurish" on foreign policy questions. A campaign spokeswoman said Romney has "been an unmitigated disaster on foreign policy every time he sticks his toe in the foreign policy waters."
