Midwestern State reached a new high-water mark by receiving 64 votes in the latest USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll released Tuesday afternoon.
The Mustangs tallied the second most votes in the newly revamped South Central Region and are on the cusp of moving into the poll for the first time since as an NCAA Division II program.
MSU (5-1) is 10 points behind No. 25 Colorado Mesa for the final spot in the national rankings.
The Mustangs have received votes in each of the last three USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 releases after gaining mention for five consecutive weeks last season. Midwestern also received votes twice during the 2001-02 season.
MSU is one of six teams from the South Central Region to receive mention in the poll joining No. 25 Colorado Mesa while MSU, Colorado State-Pueblo, Fort Lewis (Colo.), St. Mary's (Texas) and Tarleton State (Texas) are receiving votes.
Midwestern State plays host to West Texas A&M Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
Midwestern State's Keith Spellman garnered Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors Tuesday afternoon as released by league officials.
The 6-2, 185-pound sophomore transfer from Western Texas poured in 17 points to help the Mustangs to a pair of league wins on the road last week over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Spellman scored 19 points including a pair of 3-pointers while going 7-of-12 from the free-throw line as MSU recovered from a 16-point deficit to claim a victory Thursday night at Incarnate Word.
"The Wizard" fired in 10 of his 12 shots from the charity stripe to score 15 points in 21 minutes as Midwestern once again overcame a double-digit first-half deficit Saturday at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
