Hundreds of students from three elementary schools got an early Christmas this year. The University Kiwanis Club passed out gifts to kids in Wichita Falls Independent School District.
As the kids got their gifts from Santa they all had big smiles and their faces lit up. Sam Houston Principal Shane Porter, said the kids look forward to this time every year.
This is the 3rd annual Kiwanis Christmas event. All students get a bag filled with a new pair of shoes, a book, and toiletries.
Students are very grateful for the basic gifts. Sam Houston officials said 96% of their students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Santa was there spreading the true meaning of Christmas of giving and helping others.
Santa Claus commented, "This is Kiwanis Club's annual Christmas project to bring shoes and toys to kids, and let Santa help deliver them."
He added, "I'm here at Sam Houston school, next I'll be at Washington-Jackson and then Alamo school."
One student from Sam Houston Elementary who tried on her shoes said, "I'm going to tell my mom that I had a good day. I got a new pair of shoes and socks and they are pink and white."
School officials said once the students basic needs are met, it's easier for them to concentrate on their academics.
The University Kiwanis Club also gave gifts to students at Alamo and Washington-Jackson, and in total the club was able to give gifts to 1,264 students.
University Kiwanis Club officials said Walmart sold them the shoes at a discounted price, and donated socks.
