Hirschi Varsity Sits At WF Classic

For the Hirschi boys basketball team, the Wichita Falls Classic is suppose to be a showcase game. The Huskies would call D.L. Ligon Coliseum home, have a primetime tip off and a top opponent in perennial power Lubbock Estacado.

Instead, the members of the varsity squad sat in street clothes in the stands as the junior varsity team suited up.

"I would hope that after this break (mandatory five-day break)...that we got a new focus, a new spirit, a new vision," head coach Donald Hedge said. "Every thing that we want to accomplish this season is still out there. Hopefully, we can continue to work to make all those dreams reality."

Hedge did not want to discuss the "who wasn't here and why" of the game. The Huskies did have a scheduled shootaround this morning, and Hedge made the decision to sit the varsity team in the morning. He informed Lubbock Estacado's head coach in the afternoon.

The JV team lost 73-37. Cedric Battle led the team with seven points.

"I was proud of these guys," he said. "They showed up and came to play."

The loss will counts towards the varsity team's record. The varsity players met with Hedge this afternoon, in what the coached described as a positive meeting.

"I think coming out of this that we'll be a new team," he said.

Hirschi takes the floor next at Ardmore's (Okla.) tournament on Thursday, December 27.
