Inmate Found Dead In Cell

The investigation into a Wilbarger County Jail death claims an inmate committed suicide by hanging himself.

Wilbarger County Sheriff Larry Lee told Newschannel 6 a man charged with assault family violence hanged himself in his jail cell sometime Saturday using a bed sheet. His body was discovered that evening around 8 p.m.

The man had left a suicide note that listed some vague reasons for his decision to hang himself. Sheriff Lee said the note mostly apologized to jail officials and staff for involving them in his suicide.

The inmate was taken into custody on January 1st for an outstanding warrant.

Sheriff Lee said the investigation was conducted by the jail and the Texas rangers.This is the first suicide since the jail opened 19 years ago.

Newschannel 6 is choosing to not release the victim's identity.
