The Virginia-based Chesapeake Marine Training Institute offers one-day preparation courses for students to take the general radio operator’s license exam, marine radio operator’s exam and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System exam.
Gloucester, VA (PRWEB) February 09, 2013
Mariners who carry more than six passengers for hire, radio operators on land or sea that use medium or high frequencies, vessels that sail into foreign ports and ships larger than 300 gross tons that carry a radio station for safety purposes are required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to hold a radio license.
To help prepare mariners to pass the test to obtain those licenses, the Virginia-based Chesapeake Marine Training Institute now offers one-day preparation courses for students to take the general radio operator’s license exam, marine radio operator’s exam and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System exam.
Students are offered time, space and hands on equipment to prepare for the test. If the preparation is not needed, radio operators can also just come in and take the test.
Depending on the needs of the mariner or radio operator, the cost for the preparation or the preparation with exam vary, ranging from $60 to $160.
“This is a fee to cover the administration cost and the examination fee imposed by the Federal Communications Commission, for up to two examination elements,” said Capt. Guy Sorensen, President and Founder of Chesapeake Marine Training Institute. “This is a service we’re proud to offer because it’s a vital piece to keeping our mariners and vessels safe at sea.”

All preparations and exams will be held at the Chesapeake Marine Training Institute’s campus in Hayes, Va. With a minimum number of students, instructors can administer the exam off site.
