Windthorst Bridge Traffic Changes

Posted: Updated:

A portion of the new Windthorst Bridge is ready for traffic.  Motorists will be allowed to use the new bridge starting Friday.

The traffic change will allow construction crews to tear down the old structure next week.  The demolition process will take a few weeks to complete.  During the demolition phase, lane closures on U.S. 287 below will be necessary.  When they will be able to finish, depends on good weather.

Motorists will be informed of closures by large message boards on U.S. 287.  Once the old structure is destroyed, a new bridge will be built to take its place.  This structure will be the second half of the new bridge.

Originally built in 1967, the Windthorst Bridge was a little over 25-feet wide with narrow sidewalks.  The new structure will be 84-feet wide and eventually carry four lanes of traffic, once Windthorst Road is widened, with sidewalks, and a Texas turnaround for East and West traffic.

The contractor expects to wrap up the project by this summer.
