Softball Surges to #19 in NFCA Poll

Midwestern State moved up three spots to No. 19 in the latest National Fast-pitch Coaches' Association Division II Poll released Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Mustangs (35-12) extended their current winning streak to seven games with a 6-5 win over Cameron on Tuesday, have won 11 of their last 12 and are 15-3 since suffering a season-long five-game skid from March 16-23.
 
MSU is one of five teams from the South Central Region to receive mention in the poll joining No. 5 West Texas A&M (34-7), No. 10 Texas Woman's University (36-10) and No. 12 Colorado Mines (33-4-1) while St. Mary's (Texas) is receiving votes.
 
Midwestern State closes its regular season home schedule with a three-game set against Texas A&M-Kingsville this weekend at Mustangs Park. The teams play a doubleheader Friday night at 5 and 7 p.m. before squaring off for a single game on Saturday at noon.

Softball Opens South Central Region Rankings at #2

Midwestern State opens at No. 2 in this season's first edition of the South Central Region rankings released Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA Division II Softball Committee.
 
MSU improved to 34-12 by extending its current winning to seven games with a 6-5 win over Cameron Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park. Midwestern has won 11 of its last 12 games and is 15-3 since suffering a season long five-game skid from March 16-23.
 
The Mustangs are a part of a strong contingent from the Lone Star Conference occupying five of the 10 spots in the rankings.
 
West Texas A&M (32-7) leads the way followed by MSU, Texas Woman's (36-9), Colorado Mines (33-4-1), Incarnate Word (23-15), St. Mary's (Texas) (32-10), Angelo State (Texas) (25-14), Colorado State-Pueblo (25-11), St. Edward's (Texas) (24-17) and Colorado Mesa (21-11-1).
 
The top eight teams advance to the 2013 NCAA Division II South Central Regional which will be played in two four-team, double elimination tournament at campus sites from May 10-11.
 
If the postseason started today, West Texas A&M would host Colorado Mines, Incarnate Word and Colorado State-Pueblo in one regional while Texas Woman's, St. Mary's (Texas) and Angelo State would travel to Wichita Falls in the second regional.
 
The advancing teams battle in a best-of-3 super regional at the site of the highest remaining seed on May 17-18 for the right to play in the 2013 NCAA Division II Softball Championships to be held from May 23-27 at Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.
 
The NCAA Division II postseason field is set for release on Sunday, May 5 on NCAA.com.

Women's Tennis Stays #2 in Region Ranking

The Midwestern State Mustangs remain fourth in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings released Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Committee.
 
The Mustangs have a 16-5 overall record this spring, with a 13-4 Division II record and 9-3 record within the South Central Region.
 
Cameron (16-1 DII, 16-0 in region) is the top team, with Abilene Christian (6-5 DII, 5-2 in region) second and Incarnate Word (6-3 DII, 5-2 in region) third.  After MSU is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Western New Mexico (10-7 DII, 10-6 in region) fifth and the Heartland Conference's St. Mary's (5-4 DII, 5-3 in region) sixth.
 
The Mustangs are in action at the Lone Star Conference Championships at the Southlake Tennis Center in Southlake on Friday and Saturday.
 
MSU drew the No. 4 seed of the tournament by tiebreakers and faces top-seeded Cameron on Friday at 1:30 in the semifinals.  The winner advances to the championship match on Saturday at noon against the winner of Friday's Abilene Christian vs. Incarnate Word semifinal.
 
This is the last of three regional rankings before the committee selects the four participants from the region for the 2013 NCAA Division II Tournament next Tuesday.  The conference tournament winners of the Heartland and Rocky Mountain Athletic are awarded automatic berths, with two additional at-large teams being selected.
 
Regional matches will be played at the top two seeds from April 27-30, with the winners advancing to the Sweet 16 in Surprise, Ariz., May 8-11.

Men's Tennis Still 4th in Regional Rankings

The Midwestern State Mustangs continued second in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings released Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Committee.
 
The Mustangs are 15-5 overall this spring, 14-4 in Division II play and 11-2 in region, are behind Abilene Christian (10-3 in Division II play, 9-0 in region) in the committee ranking.  St. Mary's (11-3 in DII, 10-3 in region) of the Heartland Conference is in third, with Tarleton State (9-7 in DII, 9-5 in region) in fourth.  Cameron (13-5 in DII, 13-4 in region) is fifth, while the Heartland's St. Edward's (7-6 DII, 6-4 in region) is sixth and Dallas Baptist (9-9 DII, 8-6 in region) is seventh.
 
The Mustangs are in action again at the Lone Star Conference Championships Friday and Saturday at the Southlake Tennis Center in Southlake.
 
Midwestern is the No. 2 seed and plays in the semifinal at 6:30 Friday evening against the winner of the Tarleton State vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville match played at 1:30.  The championship match is Saturday at noon.
