Camp Fire Gearing Up For Summer Camps

Posted: Updated:

Camp Fire Harrell Park has been the location of Day Camp since the land was donated in 1943 by the J. T. Harrell Family. Harrell Park is Camp Fire's 16 acre park located on the west end of Lucy Park. Camp activities are conducted in the spacious lodge as well as under large shade trees scattered throughout the park. Tree houses are nestled high among the trees. Campers eagerly await their turn for lunchtime in a tree house. Harrell Park includes a self-guiding Nature Trail, the Gladys Marie Murph Building, the rustic Friendship Cabin, soccer fields, games area, sand exercise area, a covered Pavilion and colorful playground equipment. Since there is a 35 by 75 foot pool situated on the camp grounds, we are able to offer swimming lessons to all day campers. Splash time is also a part of each camper's schedule.

Archery, dancing, nature hikes, swimming lessons, camp crafts, canoeing, folk dancing, story telling, cook-outs, fishing, singing, and the list goes on and on for the activities filled with fun and offered in each session of Camp Fire USA Day Camp.

All boys and girls, five-year-old kindergartners through Jr. High, have the opportunity to register for one, two, or all three sessions of day camp. Session I is June 3-7 Session 2 is June 10-14, and Session 3 is June 17-21. Each session is Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For the convenience of working parents, children can swim at the pool for an extra $10.00 per week until the pool closes at 6:00 p.m. Those who register by Wednesday, May 29 will receive a camp T-shirt for $2. T-shirts can be purchased after that date for $10. Registrations taken after Wednesday, May 29, either at camp or at the Camp Fire office, will incur an additional $10 late registration fee. Registrations are now being accepted at the Camp Fire office at 2414 Ninth St., or camp registrations can be mailed to the office. A registration form can be downloaded on our website www.campfirentx.org.

Swimming lessons are included in the camp fee. Qualified lifeguards are on duty each day of camp.

For continuing summer fun, the Camp Fire Swimming Pool at Harrell Park is open to everyone. Campers can practice their swim skills learned at camp and enjoy family swims.
