Residents across Texoma watched as the winning numbers of the second largest Powerball Lottery jackpot of $590.5 million was announced Saturday night. The winning numbers were 22, 10, 13, 14, 52 and the Powerball number was 11. Unfortunately, there were no winners from Texoma. One winning ticket was sold in Florida and a lucky Texan purchased a ticket with 5 of the matching numbers worth $1 million in Boerne.
"I guess you're like everybody else… you just play to try to win money", says lottery enthusiast Robert Gentry.
The Powerball is played in 43 states and a single ticket costs $2. Beginning with the first ticket sold in 1992, the Texas Lottery has generated 21 billion dollars in revenue for the state and distributed 40 billion in prizes to lottery players. The odds of winning the jackpot are almost 1 in 176 million. Skeptics say playing the lottery is simply a waste of money.
Lisa Foshee who refuses to play the lottery says, "It's the urge of wanting to win that money and spending a little bit here and there. They don't realize that them spending a little bit adds up".
Despite the slim chances of winning, many are still hopeful that they will get lucky and strike it rich in the future.
If there had been no winner in last night's Powerball, the jackpot would have climbed to $925 million for Wednesday May 22nds drawing.
