TX Gun Law Takes Firearms Away From Certain People

A measure on its way to Gov. Rick Perry for approval gives law enforcement the right to take away firearms from people who are experiencing a "mental health crisis."

The measure, known as Senate Bill 1189, was first passed unanimously in the Senate, and then it gained overwhelming support in the House. Only one lawmaker in the House voted against the legislation.

Senate Bill 1189 was filed by state Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Southside Place. It allows police to take guns away from people who police have determined are a danger to themselves or others.

The bill also lays out a procedure for weapons to be returned to their owners once the person is deemed safe.
