U.S. Congressman Mac Thornberry announced Thursday that the House Armed Services Committee approved the National Defense Authorization Act for next year.
The measure was approved by a 59-2 sweep.
The legislation will include more than $550-billion in budget authority for the Departments of Defense and Energy. It also gives a 1.8% across the board in pay raise for all members of the armed forces in 2014.
This is higher than the 1% pay raise found on the President's budget proposal.
Important reforms to combat sexual assault in the military are also included in the defense authorization bill.
