The Rider Raiders' great season came to an early end Thursday afternoon at Dell Diamond in a 5-2 loss to Tomball in the 4A State Semifinals.
Tomball's Nicholas Banks threw a complete-game six-hitter, striking out ten Raiders. The Texas A&M signee also led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run.
Rider answered with two runs in the top of the third. David Pewenofkit drove in the first run with a fielder's choice grounder, then Nick Russell singled home Peyton Geisinger to give the Raiders their only lead at 2-1.
But Tomball struck back in the bottom of the inning. Dillon Menville singled to tie the game, then Eric Dunbar added a two-run single to break the tie. The Cougars wound up batting around, chasing Rider starter Austin Hagy.
David Pewenofkit threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief but the Raiders couldn't get anything more going against Banks, ending their season at 32-9 and as Region I-4A champions for the third time in four years.
It was also the final game for Rider coaches Scot Green and Josh Bobbitt.
Green announced his retirement after Rider's Regional Finals win over Cleburne, and finishes with a head coaching record of 181-81-2 in seven seasons.
His 68.6% winning percentage is second in Rider history only to Kerry Hargrove, for whom Green was an assistant.
