Texas Governor Rick Perry, he longest serving governor is Texas history, said he won't see re-election in 2014.
Perry made the announcement Monday that he plans to retire. That sets up an opening for fellow Republican and longtime Texas Attorney General Gregg Abbott in next year's GOP primary.
The former presidential candidate initially planned to announce his plans by the end of last month.
However, he delayed his decision to try, once again, to pass the abortion restrictions bill. The bill would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
