Food Stamp Fraud

Posted: Updated:

At approximately 10:00AM the Wichita Falls Police Department Financial Crimes Unit and 2 Investigators from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission executed 2 search warrants in association with food stamp fraud. The 2 warrants were designated for the Shop N Go off of 32nd Street and at the Lucky 7 Convenience Store on the corner of Southwest Parkway and Rhea Road.

After the warrants were executed, Asif Karim Juma and Yovana Ballard were detained and later charged with Prohibited Activities under the Human Resources Code Chapter 33 a 3rd Degree Felony.

Officer Jeff Hughes with the Wichita Falls Police Department said the search warrants that were issued on Wednesday were a culmination of a long term investigation. Police discovered that food stamps and the Lone Star card were being used for unapproved purchases.

Gasoline, cigarettes, other tobacco products, alcohol, and K-2, which is synthetic marijuana were all items bought using the food stamps and the lone star card.

Different Texomans had a different reaction when hearing about the food stamp fraud. One Texoman said he does not support the program because people can abuse it. Another said he still supports the program but are glad the police are capturing the people who abuse it.

Officer Hughes also said this is still an ongoing investigation. Stay with Newschannel 6 as we continue to bring you updates on this developing story.
