Posted: Updated:

A 17-year-old boy has been indicted on a manslaughter charge in connection with the shooting death of a North Texas high school football player.

District Attorney Paige Williams said that the grand jury handed up the indictment against Michael Bryce Underwood on Monday at the Montague County Courthouse.

On Aug. 31, 18-year-old Nathan Maki was fatally shot while camping out with Underwood and two 18-year-old women. They planned to go dove hunting.

Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham said at the time that Underwood accidentally shot Maki with a rifle in a field just outside of Bowie.

Underwood was arrested at the scene on a charge of underage possession of alcohol and later released on bond.

Manslaughter is a second-degree felony and carries a potential sentence of two to 20 years in prison.
