WF Wildcats Rally Past Rio Grande Valley

Posted: Updated:

The Wichita Falls Wildcats (9-2-2) picked up their third-straight win on Tuesday night, defeating the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (6-3-4) in a shootout, 2-1.

David Zevnik made 22 saves on 23 shots, plus another four stops in the shootout, to earn his fourth win of the season. Max Reisinger scored the lone goal in regulation for Wichita Falls, while Tyler Ledford tallied an assist and also notched the decisive goal in the shootout.

After a scoreless first period, the Killer Bees were the first to find the back of the net in the second stanza.

Austin Hoff carried the puck into the zone on the left wing and centered for Anthony Croston, whose initial shot was saved by Zevnik. The rebound squirted free however, allowing Hoff to pick up the loose disc and slip it past Zevnik to give the Killer Bees a 1-0 lead.

Wichita Falls knotted the affair in the blink of an eye to open the third period. A miscue by the Killer Bees after the opening faceoff allowed Ledford to skate onto a loose puck just inside the blue line. His shot from the top of the right faceoff circle whistled wide of the net, but caromed right to Reisinger on the back door. With Olli Kalkaja out of position, Reisinger had an easy tap-in for his fifth of the year just nine seconds into the frame.

With the game deadlocked at one, the teams headed for overtime, where the Wildcats had a great chance to claim the win. Kyle Bauman had a breakaway from the blue line in, but his forehand effort was saved by Kalkaja.

The contest then headed to a shootout. Ben Greiner and Rudy Junda both scored in the first round before Zevnik and Kalkaja stopped the next two shooters they faced. Ledford scored in the fourth round for Wichita Falls, stickhandling around Kalkaja and sliding the puck inside the post. Zevnik then stoned Aleksi Luhtalampi to give the Wildcats the win.

These two teams will meet again on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Wildcats conclude their six-game home-stand.
