MSU Roundup: #17 Mustang FB Cruises Past Menlo

FOOTBALL: Mustangs Cruise to Easy Win vs Menlo College

No. 17 Midwestern State battered NAIA Menlo (Calif.) with eight rushing touchdowns to roll to its seventh straight win 64-7 Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

The Mustangs (7-1) return to Lone Star Conference play Saturday against Eastern New Mexico in Blackwater Draw. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (Central Time).

Six different runners found the end zone for MSU -- all but Harlon Hill candidate Keidrick Jackson, who finished the game with 68 yards on 11 carries.

Redshirt freshman Dante Taylor paced the attack with 128 yards on 10 carries with a pair of touchdowns, while senior Peter Smith also hit pay dirt twice finishing with a season-high 65 yards on 11 totes.

Brandon Gordon tacked on 52 yards on six carries while redshirt freshman Lafrontae Conkleton rushed for 27 yards on six carries as the Mustangs rolled up 412 rushing yards as a team and 543 total yards of offense.

The Mustangs jumped out to a big, early lead as junior quarterback Jake Glover raced 65 yards on a read option on MSU's first snap of the game while Taylor punched the ball into the end zone from 21 and 4 yards out in the opening seven minute of the game to push the lead to 21-0.

Glover hit Joe Sanders for a 5-yard score on the first play of the second quarter and the Mustangs tacked on a safety on a bad punt snap as the advantage grew to 30-0 at halftime.

Menlo College struck for its lone score on the first drive of the second half when Jordan Hakuole found an opening for a 22-yard TD to cap off of a 6-play, 55-yard drive to cut the MSU lead to 30-7 with 11:43 to play in the third quarter.

The Mustangs would score the final 34 points of the contest.

MSU limited the Oaks to 171 yards of offense harassing MC quarterbacks with two sacks, seven quarterback hurries, five pass breakups and interceptions by Bernard Griffin and Donny Walsh to set up a pair of TDs.

Midwestern State extended its regular season home winning streak to 24 games dating back to the 2008 season.

VOLLEYBALL: Mustangs Swept by Pioneers in Denton

Texas Woman's net play sparked a sizzling attack to take down Midwestern State 25-15, 25-21, 25-15 Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena.

The Pioneers improved to 18-8 on the season and to 9-4 in league play, while MSU dropped to 13-11 and 5-9.

The Mustangs hit the road for a non-conference match Thursday at Northwestern Oklahoma State before returning home to face Cameron Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. First serve is set for 2 p.m.

The Pioneers combined for 13 blocks paced by Marcela Alves and Chloe' Tate who had six total blocks each to force Midwestern into 25 attack errors and a paltry .057 team kill percentage.

Sophomore outside hitter Marissa Olivares paced the Mustangs with 10 kills and completed her fourth double-double in her last five matches with 11 digs while senior outside hitter Marija Jovanovic notched eight kills with two errors in 16 attacks for a .375 attack percentage.

Redshirt freshman Madelyn Johnson paced back row efforts with 13 digs, while freshman Sarah Garfield posted three total blocks -- two solos -- to lead the Mustangs at the net.
