Three Texoma Standouts Sign College Scholarships

Three Texoma high school athletes signed to play their sport at the NCAA Division II level Thursday.

Iowa Park softball standout Peyton Helton will stay close to home, joining her former Lady Hawk teammate Baylee Voigt as a Midwestern State Mustang!

Helton had a 30-4 record as a junior in the circle, with a stellar 0.78 ERA and 285 strikeouts in just over 198 innings pitched.

She said in addition to being able to play with her friend and teammate, having the potent MSU offense behind her was appealing.

"They hit the ball like crazy," Helton said. "So, really, as long as they hit and they're behind me, I can pitch all day for them."

Wichita Falls High School golfer Katy Goen will also stay in the Lone Star Conference, signing to play for Texas A&M-Commerce.

Goen has been named all-District all three seasons at Old High, advancing to Regionals each year. She has won 6 tournaments for the Lady Coyotes, in addition to a very successful career in the summers on the NTPGA circuit.

Finally, Holliday's R.J. Trainham will head to a former LSC school, East Central University in Ada, OK.

Trainham was part of Holliday's Class 2A state championship team this past spring, and finished 8th individually at the state tournament, earning All-State honors.

Trainham told us he liked the small-town feel of Ada, where he also has some family ties, and also has known ECU golf coach Danny Key for a few years.

"It's a small town, it's a lot smaller than Wichita Falls," Trainham said. "So it's not a big difference going from Holliday up to ECU."
