Honoring a Hero

Posted: Updated:
Wichita County Sheriff's Office held its Quarterly Awards Ceremony Thursday, December 19. The ceremony honored some of its deputies and veterans, and one deputy received a very special award.

Lieutenant George Robinson Jr. was awarded a Purple Heart for his actions involved with the July 19, T-38C Talon crash.

"I didn't have any idea what was going on. I knew something was happening, but it blew me away on the Purple Heart. Not in a million years would [I have] dreamed I got a Purple Heart," said Lieutenant Robinson.

He suffered a serious ankle injury while trying to rescue one of the pilots. Lieutenant Robinson has had three surgeries to put two steel rods and sixteen screws in his leg.

It's been five months since the crash, but Lieutenant Robinson said he's only at 10 to 20 percent.

"It's going to be a full and complete recovery. It's just going to take a little bit of time," said Lieutenant Robinson.

Even though he is no where near 100 percent, he is still able to go to work. He does mostly desk work because he can't run or jump.

Lieutenant Robinson has been overwhelmed with support from his family, the community and Sheppard Air Force Base.

Lieutenant Robinson said, "My wife, I would not be here today without her.  Everything she's done she's pushed me pushed me and my whole family."

He also said this accident will not change the way he protects Wichita County.
