The amount of training time you need in order to receive a Concealed Handgun License in Texas, has shrunk from 10 hours to four hours.

Point Blank Owner and CHL trainer, Chris Reitsma helped push for the changes to the training time requirements. Reitsma said, the old time requirement was too much for both instructors and students.

"Being that the class is shorter, we can offer it at different times of day, " said Reitsma. "We can have afternoon classes or morning classes, weekday classes, and we can better fit everybody's schedule. Not everybody can take off work on a Saturday and then spend all day and that many hours in the class when it was ten to fifteen hours. There's been an increase in people taking the class from those that wanted to take it but never could find the time to take an all day class."

Earlier this year Reitsma testified in front of the Texas Senate and House, promoting shorter training hours.

"Several of the legislative members there have their CHL," said Reitsma. "When we were talking about lowering the class room time, a class they've sat through, they didn't have a problem with it at all. It just went through without any trouble."

Reitsma said it is not just training hours that were changed. CHL owners will now be able to renew their license online versus having to retake the entire course.
