U.S. Surgeon Generals Warning Not To Smoke Hits Milestone

This week marks 50 years since the U.S. Surgeon Generals report on "Smoking and Health" was released.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, an estimated 8 million U.S. pre-mature deaths were prevented because of tobacco control efforts.

Efforts include everything from cigarette warning labels and escalating taxes on cigarettes, to even putting restrictions on where people can smoke.

Luther Terry was the Surgeon General who released the report.

"My advice to the smoker is to stop smoking." Said Terry the U.S. Surgeon General in 1964. "My advice to the non-smoker is don't start smoking."

For Jerrimiah Webb, a smoker, there is no question that smoking affects health.

"I mean, it's harmful to your body. There is no rocket science about it. I mean, it's not like you're going to live forever. It's your own personal decision," said Webb. "It's going to cause harm, and it's going to cause problems."

Webb said he has been smoking since he was young.

"I think I first had a cigarette when I was nine," said Webb. "And that was not a regular smoking habit. It was just okay your having a cigarette sneaking on top of grandmas roof or whatever."

Webb said he has been smoking regularly since he was 18. According to the Centers for Disease Control one in every five American adults is a smoker. The study also stated that one in every five deaths is linked to smoking.

Webb said he wants to quit someday.
