MSU Men Sweep Weekly LSC Honors

Midwestern State's Monzaigo Williams and Xavier Blackburn gained Lone Star Conference Player of the Week honors Monday afternoon when the league released weekly awards.

Williams, a senior from Palmdale, Calif., earned top offensive honors after ripping the nets for a game-high 27 points including five 3-pointers to lead the Mustangs to a 76-70 win against West Texas A&M Wednesday night in Canyon.

The 6-foot point guard connected on three consecutive treys to ignite a 13-0 run late in the opening half to pull the Mustangs even at 38-38 just 1:45 before intermission. He then hit back-to-back 3s early in the second half to give MSU control in its second straight win in Canyon -- a first in series history.

Williams closed the week with a 13-point, 5-assist, 4-steal effort in just 26 minutes in a 66-41 rout of Eastern New Mexico.

For the week, Williams averaged 20 points while shooting 70 percent from the field (14-of-20) and 75 percent from 3-point range (6-of-8) while pulling down four board and dishing four assists per game with five total steals.

Blackburn garnered his second straight defensive player of the week honor after playing a key role in an historic defensive night as Midwestern State rolled to a 25-point win over ENMU.

The 6-4 junior from New Iberia, La. scored eight points, but snagged a game 11 boards -- nine defensive -- with two blocks and a steal as the Mustangs limited the Greyhounds to a 19.3 percent shooting night which ranks as the second lowest opponent field goal percentage in school history.

Blackburn delivered a 15-point, 7-rebound effort while helping the Mustangs overcome a 13-point deficit in the first half to beat West Texas A&M Wednesday night in Canyon.

For the week, Blackburn averaged 12.0 points and 9.0 rebounds -- with 16 defensive boards -- to go along with two blocked shots and a steal.

Midwestern State battles rival Tarleton State for early season LSC supremacy Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
