Several Medical Professionals Take the Stand

The trial for Brent Benefield continued Wednesday as several medical witnesses were called in to testify.

Forensic Pathologist, Dr. Donald Wright was back on the stand Wednesday morning answering questions on medical literature and bbio mechanical studies of Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The Defense then called Medical Examiner, Dr. Lloyd White, who performed the autopsy of Brent Benefield’s 4 month old son to the witness stand. Before jurors entered the room, Dr. White resisted to testify because he said he had been threatened by Denton, Wichita and Tarrant counties District Attorneys. After the judge questioned Dr. White over the threats that were made, the judge then said, Dr. White would have to sit in the Wichita County Jail until he would testify.

When Dr. White finally agrees to testify, he said the 4 month old died of a homicide due to blunt force trauma to the head.

The Prosecutors questioned Dr. White’s credibility because since the autopsy was performed, he has been fired as a medical examiner from Tarrant County.

Prosecutors called both a Pediatric Neurologist and a Radiologist to the stand who showed jurors the MRI’s of the child’s brain, arms, and legs stating that the child did not die of a blood clot to his brain.

The trial for Brent Benefield will resume Thursday morning at the Wichita County Courthouse.
