MSU Softball Picked 3rd in LSC Preseason Poll

Midwestern State was ticketed to finish third in the Lone Star Conference race in the league's annual preseason poll of coaches, sports information directors and selected media released Friday morning.
 
Defending champion Texas Woman's was tabbed the favorite receiving 13 first-place votes and a total of 166 points followed by West Texas A&M (159 points, 8 first-place votes), MSU (146 points, 1 first-place vote), Angelo State (145 points, 2 first-place votes), Tarleton State (95), Cameron (76), Eastern New Mexico (40) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (37).
 
The Mustangs return three All Americans including reigning National Fast-pitch Coaches' Association Division II Catcher of the Year Kim Jerrick (.417, 17 2B, 19 HR, 54 RBI, 16 SB), Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year Katelyn Vinson (.503, 12 2B, 22 HR, 67 RBI) and junior third baseman Kelley Schaefer (.420, 6 2B, 13 HR, 69 RBI).
 
The trio sparked the Mustangs to a 43-17 record featuring one of the most prolific offensive threats in the country.
 
MSU crushed a program record 86 home runs while ranking second in NCAA Division II with a .359 team batting average, second in home runs per game (1.43) and second in slugging percentage (.578).
 
The Mustangs return all but 17 of those home runs as MSU also welcomes back sophomore infielder Shelby Carter (.319, 8 2B, 10 HR, 42 RBI), sophomore outfielder Haley Howerton (.319, 3 2B, 15 SB) and sophomore outfielder Chelsey Wall (.288, 4 2B, 5 HR, 26 RBI).
 
Junior infielder Katy Vandewater, an NJCAA All-American last spring, adds to the mix after posting a .451 average with 17 doubles and 14 homers last season at Weatherford College.
 
Junior infielder Katelyn Potts adds power after playing the last two seasons at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, while redshirt freshman outfielder Demi Thompson moves in from Arkansas Tech.
 
The addition of a solid prep signing class including IF/OF Taylor Bermudes (Houston Bellaire HS), IF Krisha Hamm (Graham HS), P Katlyn Holmes (Gunter HS), OF Claire Hopkins (Pampa HS), P Erin Knox (West HS), IF/OF Jennifer Quintero (Fredericksburg (Va.) Stafford HS) and C/IF Baylee Voigt (Iowa Park HS).
 
Midwestern State opens the season with a twin bill against defending South Region champion Valdosta State (Ga.) on Feb. 1 at the West Florida Spring Tournament in Pensacola.
 
The home opener is set for Friday, Feb. 14 against Southern Arkansas as part of the Holiday Inn/MSU Invitational at Mustangs Park.
