Sentence Recommended In Child Death Trial

A Wichita County jury has recommended that Brent Benefield be sentenced to 10 years in prison for Injury to a Child Resulting in Death. The jury also recommended a 5 year sentence on Continuous Violence against his wife.

The jury recommended that the sentences run concurrently. This means that Benefield will spend a maximum 10 years behind bars and a minimum of 5 years, if granted parole for good behavior.

That recommendation came down late Tuesday afternoon.

Monday, the alternate juror was called into the replace a jury member because of health reasons. Tuesday another juror was unable to serve because of health reasons. Judge Bob Brotherton allowed the trial to continue will the remaining 11 jury members.

After hearing closing arguments from both sides jurors deliberated for over two and a half hours before announcing their sentencing recommendation.

The Judge in the case is expected to make a final ruling on Wednesday. Newschannel 6 will be in the courtroom to bring you the latest.
