A Lawton woman is dead following a hit-and-run accident on the west side of the city.

Lawton police say it happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning on Old Cache Road.

The car was headed eastbound when it struck the woman, who was walking along the road.

Police have been able to contact the suspect who told them she left the scene because she thought she had hit an animal.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
